hoover Carts
- One example of an allusion in To Kill a Mockingbird is: "Somehow, it was hotter then: a black dog suffered on a summer's day; bony mules hitched to Hoover carts flicked flies in the sweltering shade of the live oaks on the square," (6).
- This shows the time setting of the book:
-Hoover carts are old cars that do not work well that are hitched to animals (horses, mules, goats, Huskies, etc.)
-These carts were named after Hebert Hoover because it was believed that the Great Depression was his fault. He was the president of the United States during the time that our stalk market and economy crashed. Many Americans did (and still do) believe that this was his fault. Many people also believe that during the Great Depression, he did nothing to get people out of the terrible situation they were in.
Winston County, North Alabama
- Another example of and allusion in To Kill a Mockingbird is: "(When Alabama seceded from the Union on January 11, 1861, Winston Country seceded from Alabama, and every child in Maycomb County knew it,)" (21).
- This also shows the time setting of the book and it shows that in Maycomb County, even kids knew about what was going around in the world around them recently:
